Soy - Is it really a health food?

Touted as a health food for years - we have been misled by those who needed to create a market for soybean crops in the U.S. A wonderful book I recommend is called"Soy Deception", by well known thyroid expert Dr. David Brownstein. When I meet a vegetarian often I can spot those who consume a lot of soy, indicated by the puffiness of the face, particularly around the eyes, as Brownstein explains in his book/video series on thyroid dysfunction. This past summer I attended a vegan potluck with my daughter, and I explained why I avoid soy (spotting three likely soy consumers sitting across from me at the table). Lo and behold, after I explained what I had learned, I learn in return that each was on medication for thyroid issues. Obviously, I was not surprised.

Rather than ask all of you to read Brownstein's book, this link to an article by Dr. Joe Mercola, whom many of you are probably familiar, is a great summary of key points covered in the book. My self-appointed mentor, neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock, has written extensively on the ill effects of soy. Although many vegan enthusiasts still tout soy as a health food, even organic has its issues.
All soy, even organic, absorbs more glutamates from the ground than any other plant in the plant kingdom - per Blaylock. Glutamates are a form of neurotoxin - that word alone should make one nervous. Neurotoxins, as you may surmise, affect the brain - not only memory loss and function, but as well - behavioral disorders such as ADHD, ADD, bi-polar may experience a change in attitude or concentration after consuming soybean products.
In the June 2004 issue of the Blaylock newsletter, the good doctor reports on Alzheimer prevention, and cautions readers to avoid hydrolyzed soy protein isolates, soy extracts, and soybean oil, the latter of which is in the greatest percentage of processed foods. I truly believe Blaylock is a pioneer in the realm of cause and effect of brain dysfunction.
For vegans who are using protein shakes containing soy isolate, I encourage you to dig deeper, and consider a switch to an easy-to-digest yellow pea/ brown rice based protein powder. I personally use Arbonne Essentials, which not only tastes great, but has the additional benefit of cranberry protein - allowing for a 100% amino acid profile score. You are welcome to contact me for a complete ingredient list. By the way, this product contains NO artificial ingredients or trace heavy metals - as in "zero" ppm.
If you wish to consume soy - it is recommended to limit to 2-3 times weekly, and ONLY fermented soy products (no, this does not include milk). Organic is a critical choice, as explained in Mercola's article regarding U.S. grownGMO soy vs. organic (chart illustration as well). Below are the four soy foods fermented and considered a healthier choice.
  • Natto
  • Miso
  • Tempeh
  • Tamari (fermented soy sauce - be careful, you want fermented!)

On the subject of hormones, the estrogenic properties of soy may have a benefit for those suffering from hot flashes, but that is an entirely different subject of which I would be happy to discuss with you privately. A hormone supplement containing soy is much different than consuming main course dishes made with tofu.
In Mercola's article, he is not 100% accurate, from my understanding of estrogen receptors, in regard to soy contributing to cancer. Phytoestrogens (plant estrogens) are not the same as estradiol - the cancer-contributing hormone that our body produces. This is an entirely different subject for discussion.
For the purposes of a clean eating or elimination diets to promote healthy living - soy can be inflammatory, is often allergenic and prohibits nutrient uptake.
May you enjoy good health all the days of your life.

Should Flaxeed Scare Us With Estrogenic Properties?

Recently on Dr. Oz the benefits of flax seed was discussed, but it was also mentioned to contain estrogenic properties. This has made some women nervous about using flax seed. Some even claim that taking flax seed has increased hot flashes, which is contrast to many reports stating otherwise, if you were to google "flax seed and hot flashes". This article and news from the Mayo Clinic supports another boost for flax seed oil.
Here in lies a probable misunderstanding...flax seed oil does not contain phytoestrogens, however, the whole flax seed (which contains fiber rich lignans) does - as the estrogenic properties are found in the lignans. Lignans, in fact, have cancer protective properties, which is why flax seed is an essential food in the Budwig protocol, which  has saved the lives of 1000s of cancer patients through the years.

Let's dispel some myths or concerns regarding phytoestrogens...and take a look at some facts:
Phytoestrogens take up estrogen receptors. Estradiol (E2) is the cancer causing estrogen (we have 3 types in our body, both men and women). When plant estrogens take up receptors, in essence, they take up a "parking spot" for estradiol 2.  Phytoestrogens actually BENEFIT the body by reducing stored estrogen load.

For those experiencing hot flashes, usually caused by low estrogen, another hormone, often overlooked, is bio-identical progesterone. Personally, I used the Arbonne Prolief bHRT progesterone cream (Prolief) to head off my hot flashes when I went through :"the change" a couple of years ago.

Many Arbonne clients prefer PhytoProlief, and those experiencing major flushing or even "soaking the sheets in sweat" add in the Menopause Support oral supplement. It pretty much depends on the stage you are at.

Another favorite for women experiencing hot flashes...  instant relief is realized with the cooling Arbonne SeaSource Renewing Body Gelee, a sea botanical based, none hormonal gel-like lotion that can also hydrate very dry skin.. For my "wise through the years" clients, it is a most favored Arbonne product - a best seller during the holidays for the grandparent on the shopping list.

A word of caution, however, for flax seed users... Whole seed is not going to break down to provide the Omega 3 benefit...it is recommended to use a coffee grinder and grind fresh every couple of days to release the benefits of the oil so they become bio-available (absorbed) by the body. A bottle of expressed flax seed from the grocery store most likely already contains free radicals...as flax seed oil has a short shelf life.

When using vegan Omega 3 supplements, Raymond Francis, author of the book "Never Fear Cancer Again" recommends a supplement that preserves flax seed oil with nitrogen. Such is the case with the Arbonne Omega 3 that we utilize in our family. It is equivalent to 4 salmon steaks, is pure, and also contains DHA from environmentally controlled/grown sea algae to ensure purity. (ORAC 8,000)

Soy, estrogenic in nature as well, poses a number of health concerns... such as a high glutamate content, even organic, as it absorbs glutamate from soil more than any other plant in the plant kingdom. (paraphrased from Russell Blaylock "Excitotoxins, The Tastes that Kills")  Excitotoxins destroy brain cells, and brain cells do not regenerate. A few days ago we watched a documentary on the Gerson Therapy for cancer treatment...if all of you could see the video, I suspect you would eliminate soy from your diet immediately. (I am grateful to have learned about this several years ago at my first Arbonne party/workshop that I attended.) Soy products affect thyroid, which is why you may notice many vegetarians with swelling around eyes, facial features, etc. Dr. David Browstein writes a book I highly recommend about the deception of soy.

ESTROGEN HORMONE 101Estrogens have a number of sources: human body manufacture (3 types), environmental and plant based. If you were to ask your physician how many types of estrogens there are, I would not be surprised if they only know of one.  What may be even more shocking, per a hormone expert/author/MD friend of mine...endocrinologists may not be know much more. I point this out only because of a recent experience we had, and if you are not satisfied, seek a 2nd opinion. It could be critical to your health later on.

Phtyoestrogens are very different from chemical based, xeno estrogens introduced to the body by environmental toxins. These sources include, but are certainly not limited to:
FUMES: exhaust fumes from automobiles, paint, hair styling/dying products, nail lacquers
HYGIENE & MAKE-UP: parabens, petro-chemicals (petrolatum, mineral oil, etc), formeldahyde-producing preservatives, sodium laurel sulfate, hydroquinone, etc.
FOODS: growth hormones in livestock, eggs, GMO foods, non-organic foods, processed foods

Xeno-estrogens, unlike plant estrogens, STORE in the body. Fat cells are major "storage closets" for estrogen and it is estrogen in excess that creates a number of health issues.

Flax seed continues to be a highly recommended source of Omega 3, and lignan fiber, by the top alternative medicine doctors treating cancer. In fact, it is a key ingredient in the highly acclaimed Budwig Diet protocol. It would be a shame for people to stop taking this highly beneficial food because of a little sweat.

Regarding hot flashes, in the past several years studies are finding HEALTH BENEFITS for the heart, even though we may not be keen on the idea that we may benefit from the sweat equity in transition.  Yes, we need sleep, and we do need to function. If hot flashes and night sweats are debilitating and preventing a good night's rest...it should be addressed.  However, if a hot flash is a mild flushing - as I experienced moments ago while typing this (oh, the irony!).... a dab of Seasource Renewing Body gelee on the back of my neck, forehead and behind the knees quickly did the trick!

I wish for you VITALITY. May you feel great, look great and live great!

Elimination Diets....Are They Worth the Trouble?

Elimination diets are popular, and often prescribed by nutritionists and endocrinologists trying to get to the bottom of a patient's GI issues.
Yesterday I shared my own journey back to good health, and how I did not eliminate, but reduced gluten and dairy.
For people who are not having serious health concerns, the concept of eliminating their favorite food groups for 30 days is a short-lived idea. Short-lived because it requires planning ahead for grocery shopping, recipes, and more. Finding a great support system is key for success, and I am fortunate to be a part of a great group of people in a private Facebook forum that focuses on healthy living. We share recipes, and store bought foods that we have found, with great joy and diligence in label reading, that meet the elimination diet criteria.
If the thought of eliminating a food group 100% for thirty days seems overwhelming, I encourage you to cut back on ONE food group (gluten/wheat or dairy are two food groups that are typically prime suspect for a host of symptoms) for four weeks.  These two food groups are most often associated with skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and more. Keep in mind that cutting back can help one lose weight, but as long as a food group is still in the diet, a skin condition or other ailment is not likely to go away.
If weight loss is your goal - counting calories is not necessary, and you don't need to measure or weigh yourself unless you wish to....your clothes will let you know if your body is losing body fat through the mid-section and elsewhere, and in all likelihood, your joints and overall sense of wellness will be tell tale signs of how your body is responding.
It is imperative to find an alkaline-based (aka vegetable/plant-based food) substitute to take the place of the glutenous foods you are eliminating. Whether it is breakfast cereal, toast or bagel, or sandwich or pizza - you want to fuel your body with food that does not fuel diseased cells. Fresh, raw plant-based foods are a great choice. For me personally, a vegan, low-glycemic protein shake  free of soy (thyroid disruptor), and artificial ingredients, was key to my success. I added Arbonne Fiber Boost to my shake as well, as my diet seriously lacked fiber (important for colon cancer prevention) and the combo of protein and fiber helped me to feel full well past the lunch hour (as a strawberry smoothie was my breakfast meal replacement).

Now that farmer's markets are back in season, it is a great time to cut back on gluten, and instead, indulge in nutrient-dense foods for a healthier and happier life.

May you feel great, look great and live great!

Cutting Back on Gluten Could Be Life Changing

Gluten Free -it's a huge buzz right now in the wellness industry. Often I am asked, "Why was gluten not a problem 30 years ago?"
Today's wheat is genetically-modified... the gluten content has been increased, and it is often referred to as franken-wheat. It is difficult for the human digestive tract to break down this newer gluten, and it can contribute to a number of health issues. Some times gluten can be the culprit for certain skin conditions and/or chronic sinus issues -which we learned when we eliminated gluten from our teenage son's diet for several weeks.
There are a number of books and articles on the topic of gluten and wheat, and it is encouraged for additional reading. Instead, I want to share my own experience and journey to renewed health...
Four years ago I was introduced to the company Arbonne. Consultants in the company educate people on label reading, which was not a practice I was accustomed to when purchasing products. I began to learn, study, subscribe to newsletters of medical professionals practicing alternative medicine, and built a library on hormone balance, nutritional wellness and cancer prevention...and so the journey continued.
I was very overweight, had chronic joint pain, my blood sugar numbers were borderline type II diabetic, and I had some additional concerns that made me quite nervous. I was using heartburn OTC medications daily.
A book on hormone balance titled, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer", by Dr. John Lee, Dr. David Zava and Virginia Hopkins, changed my life. It was about so much more than breast cancer. A few paragraphs on nutrition provided the life-changing "ah ha" moment. It was really quite a simple concept - in this book I learned that ALL processed, refined flours are metabolised just like table sugar in the body. Cancer cells are fueled by sugar.
By the way, this book was about much more than breast cancer. It talked about every cancer connected to the human reproductive system - including prostrate cancer. At the time, one of my dearest friends and spiritual mentor was preparing to meet his Maker, having had prostrate cancer years earlier which had returned as bone cancer.
It was from this point on that I made a decision...not to go Gluten Free, but to cut processed flour foods way back. For my morning routine, I substituted a vegan, soy free protein smoothie for convenience and great taste. This resolved any temptation I may have had to return to my breakfast of "heart healthy, cholesterol lowering multi-grain cereal" - which I learned was a clever marketing ploy, and not a true "heart healthy" fact..
At first, I cut back 50% on refined flour products. (This is much more than WHITE bread folks!)
I also eliminated processed skim milk, after learning milk contributed to acid reflux. The acid reflux diminished much, as well, I lost 32 lbs. in three months. Encouraged, I continued to cut back on gluten, and discovered I really did not miss breads, pizza crust and baked goods much. Rather than sandwiches for lunch, I enjoyed a large salad of organic greens, chicken, raw seeds, berries and feta cheese, with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and squirt of fresh lemon juice for dressing. (Bottled, store-bought dressings, for the most part, contain ingredients that do not promote a healthy lifestyle.)
Encouraged by the initial weight loss, I continued to decrease refined flour products, and to this day gluten products are approximately only 10-15% of my weekly food intake. Three years ago this June, I had lost 85 lbs. and have maintained 80 lbs. of that weight loss for these past several years. After the 65 lb. milestone I did participate in an elimination diet as outlined by Arbonne, which resulted in another 16 lbs. lost in 30 days. It was through this program that I was able to discern, by learning to listen to my body, that I had a gluten sensitivity. Symptoms I incur when I consume gluten include aches in my knees, and sinuses that begin to drain incessantly within minutes.
If you would like to learn more about the Arbonne "30 Days to Healthy Living" program contact me and I can email you a recorded call that explains the top allergenic foods and how to go about discerning your own food sensitivities.
May you feel great, look great and live great today and always!

Gluten Free Teff Pancakes - The BEST pancakes ever!

The first time our daughter had these pancakes she said they were the best she had ever had. My children ask for Teff pancakes often, and my husband, who is not a fan of pancakes, even likes these particular cakes as they are not DRY, as most pancakes tend to be.  Teff pancakes are better than buckwheat, buttermilk or any of the pancakes I have grown up with.  Gluten free - these pancakes are complex carb based and with a few channges, low glycemic in regards to sugar content.

This recipe is also DAIRY and SOY free - and therefore, it is a most satiating breakfast food for those on the elimination food plan, or those who prefer anti-inflammatory food choices.

I have made this recipe previously, but today am reposting with a few ehancements per my personal preference. I have also cut the recipe in half as I felt like I was forever making pancakes on the griddle with the original. Which is great if you have a large family or want leftover cakes on hand.

The original recipe is from Nourshing Meals and can be found in the Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook. If you are vegan and want to make the pancakes egg free, explore the Nourishng Meals website for Teff Banana Pancakes - on our list to try soon as well. The cookbook is one I reach for time and time again.

Today's recipe includes "raw-cooked" homemade applesauce. Inspired by Pioneer Woman, I changed it up a bit, using low glycemic coconut sugar. It was so quick and easy to make, I encourage you to make homemade applesauce for your recipe, and perhaps even for topping in lieu of high glycemic maple syrup. Another change from my orignal Teff pancake recipe shared over a year ago, this recipe  adds a splash of apple cider vinegar, which makes the pancakes lighter.

Raw Cooked Homemade Applesauce
1/2 large apple, peeled, cut into wedges
1/2 lemon, juice and set aside
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. raw coconut sugar
1 T. water

To make the applesauce, in a small blender, combine ingredients and blend until fairly smooth. Add a little bit more water at a time if needed, to desired consistency. Small bits of apple are fine.  Let this sit as the lemon juice will help "cook" the apple. Recipe makes approx. 1/2 c.to 2/3 c. of applesauce to be used in recipe below. Double the recipe if you would like to top your pancake with applesauce.

Apple-Cinnamon Teff Pancakes
Dry Ingredients:
1 cups dark brown Teff flour
1/4 cup tapioca flour
1 teaspoons baking powder*
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
Wet Ingredients:
1 cup plain unsweetened almond mlk (we use Silk brand)
2 T. raw applesauce (recipe above)
1 large organic eggs
1 T. melted virgin coconut oil
1/2 tsp. Bragg's apple cider vinegar
1 T. coconut sugar

Begin to heat a 10-inch skillet over medium heat. Melt the coconut oil in skillet while mixing the dry ingredients, and pour into a small glass prep bowl. You will want approximately 2-3 tablespoons of melted oil. Measure coconut oil for the recipe after it as melted. You may also wish to set your oven to the lowest setting, as this is how I keep pancakes, and plates, warm until all are ready to be served.
Whisk the dry ingredients together in a medium-sized mixing bowl. It is important to blend the dry ingredients well before addng wet ingredients.   In a separate bowl, mix wet ingredients together with a whisk, and slowly pour into the dry ingredients, blending well.

With heat set to medium, coat your skillet with coconut oil prior to each cake, if needed. Use a 1/2 cup measure, or soup ladle, to pour the batter onto the pan. Cook for 60 to 90 seconds on one side. As the pancake batter starts to bubble, and edges appear dry,  flip and cook for 30 seconds more. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of oil in between pancakes. Adjust the cooking temp as needed. These pancakes cook up fast so you may want to monitor the temperature, and lower as needed.  Don't be distracted by other tasks.

I mix my pancake batter in the 8 cup stainless steel mixing bowl from Pampered Chef. I love the rubber grip on the bottom.  As the batter is near the end, because the bowl has a pour spout, I can use a rubber spatula to pour all remaining batter on to the griddle. The last pancake always tends to be a bit larger than the rest.

Recipe makes six 6-7" pancakes.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF TEFF
Teff flour has become one of my most favorite gluten free flours, and I will be certain to never let my pantry run out. The grain orignates from Ethiopia and is high in calcium, and vitamin C, which is rare in a grain.  High in resistant starch, the fiber of Teff can help manage blood-sugar, weight control and colon health. If you have been a long time reader of my health journey, you will understand why ALL of those benefits would be of great personal interest to me. You can learn more about Teff from the Whole Grain Council.
Here is to feeling great, looking great, and living great...which is how we can feel when we focus on a lifestyle focused on plant based foods and consumer products that are pure, safe and beneficial.

Do You Want to Lose Weight AND Lose Your Mind?

Recent reports on toxins and trace metals in popular, and trusted, protein  powder brands have been mind blowing.  Some not so surprising, but for Beach fans, this report may be shocking. I have long been of the mindset that although expensive, this brand was of very high quality because the company does avoid artificial ingredients and visible ingredients were beneficial.  Purity of a product, however, is not something that can always be seen. Manufacturers are not required to add trace metal PPMs to their labels, yet, these metals do affect our well being, and long term memory.
More surprising is what Dr. Oz lists as "safe" protein powders. Safe by whom? The manufacturers who produce them? Apparently Consumer Labs is  missing the mark, citing proteins with acceptable trace metals but not taking into account other ingredients that contribute to alzheimers, dementia, heart disease and more.
Reviewing the ingredients of the supposed safe powders you will see hormone disrupting ingredients such as soy, inflammatory ingredients such as carrageenan, and GASP!!  artificial sweeteners such as ASPARTAME and SUCRALOSE!!
Really OZ?  I recommend Dr. Oz click his heels together and invite Dr. Russell Blaylock on to his show so that his viewers can be educated not only about immediate benefits of losing weight, but the longstanding benefits of having mental health. As you age certain ingredients build up in our system, which in turn takes a toll on brain heatlh. Avoiding these ingredients is just as important as avoiding trace metals.
Health Ranger Mike Adams is doing a great job of informing consumers about trace metal toxicities in not only protein powders, but processed foods as well, such as Wheaties. Mike recommends a whey protein, but for me personally - I want to ensure I am consuming primarily an alkaline diet to allow my cells to retain oxygen (fuel for life).
After much research I settled on a vegan protein shake for my family that contans NO lead, mercury, tungsten, cadmium or aluminum. Even though it is vegan it provides all BCAAs, scoring 100% on the amino acid profile. Raw organic/non GMO foods are tested for purity before cold processing. The company has been in business for 34 years and the research and development department is cutting edge, using ingredients for years that are just recently making news as being beneficial.
We have been using this protein shake brand for 4 years. It is pure, safe and beneficial for not only myself, but I trust my children's health with this brand, too. Best of all - they love the taste!
We have all become much more healthy - no Rx or OTC in our home any longer. If you would like to learn more about the brand we have come to trust for our dairy and gluten free needs, give me a shout.

To your health,
Rita S.

The Greatest Health Food Misconception

A new cooking show, called "Eating Allergen Free" or something like that, aired on PBS Create. It is the first time I caught a glimpse of the show and I was so excited to see a cooking show addressing the issue of food allergies.
I did not catch whom the chef was...if I did, I would write him, but instead...I am steaming a bit on my blog instead.
As the chef started preparing a ALLERGEN free dish from "whole, non-processed" foods - he stressed the importance of eliminating gluten and dairy. He then proceeded to start making mashed potatoes with SOY MILK!  I was appalled, quite frankly.
The process of converting soy beans to milk is not a wholesome, healthy choice.  The heat exposure affects the beans and is just one problem of many when addressng the unhealthy properties of soy beans.  I encourage everyone to read THE WHOLE SOY STORY - a book by Dr. Kaayla Daniel.
http://www.amazon.com/Whole-Soy-Story-Americas-Favorite/dp/0967089751/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1379813742&sr=1-1&keywords=soy

Per Dr. Russel Blaylock, a neurosurgeon out of New York, soybeans contain more GLUTAMATE than any other plant in the plant kingdom.  Organic soybeans are not excluded from this. Glutamates are BAD - to put it simply.  Glutamates affect brain cells, contribute to brain tumors, and as I learned in his September 2013 newsletter, play a huge role in Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  All MS patients should cut glutamate (MSG is one well known ingredient) from their diet.

Thyroid disorders are considered to be reaching epidemic proportions. In my independent consultantng business, I would surmise that 1 out of 5 women I meet indicate thyroid problems on their profile card. SOYBEANS raise havoc with the thyroid hormone. Even if a person is not eating tofu or drinking soy milk...SOY is an ingredient found in nearly all processed foods in one form or another.

People with a thyroid disorder may have some outward appearances to indicate such a problem...water retention, puffiness around the eyes, or swollen looking facial features - are some tell tale signs that Dr. David Brownstein, a renown expert on thyroid disorders, discusses in hs book, "How To Overcome Thyroid Disorders".

Soy has estrogenic effects and therefore should be avoided by cancer surivor's who have had an estrogen dominant breast cancer, as well as cervical, ovarian and even prostrate cancer. It affects hormone balance.

Soy based baby formula's are banned in Europe for a reason...few of which have been cited here. Do you wonder why Europe bans soy baby formula but the U.S. has no such regulation?  Think about the agricultural soy industry in the U.S.  It comes down to the bottom line...the almighty dollar.

"But the Asians eat it and are healthy"...you might be thinking. In Asia soy is consumed more as a condiment, whereas we Americans tend to make it a substitue main dish ingredient.  Asian cultures also consume FERMENTED soy ...of which the fermentation process removes trypsin, a component of the soybean. Trypsin is found to promoteexcess cell growth, tumors in rats. (BTW - rats are used n research studies as ther metab0ilism closely resembles that of humans.)  Soy MILK is not a staple in Asia.

Should soy be avoided at all costs?  This is really up to the individual.  If thyroid is a concern, or you have MS - I would suggest avoiding soy based on all I have read. If you are healthy and eat primarily 80%  vegetables and fruit loaded with anti oxidants - your body can probably counter any ill affects from genetically modified and processed soybeans - and don't be fooled ...GMO soybeans are an American food staple.

Lots of inforamation is available to learn the tuth about soy. For your own sake, I encourage it.

To your heatlh,
Rita S.

Choosing A Protein Shake Meal Replacement

So many choices in protein shakes...but which product is truly the best for weight loss? Well, in that regard...I would venture a guess that most will help one lose weight.  But at what cost?
Like so many foods that line the grocery stores, labels promise "good for lowering cholesterol", "low-fat", "with extra virgin olive oil" (so we are lead to believe it is healthy). Protein shake labels also make plenty of claims.
But what are you really buying? This is why becoming an educated label reader makes a difference for long term health.
Take for instance, soy based protein powder, with organic obviously being a better choice than not.  Most soybean crops are genetically modified. (I believe I read over 90% are GMO.) With what? Herbicide for one.  Herbicides mimic estrogen in the body when consumed, they are nasty endocrine disruptors. Increased estrogen can lead to cancer. (This is one reason I would rather have dandelions in the yard than ChemLawn sprays.)  We have Monsanto to thank for this, in large part - stand up against this giant poisoning our food supply and let your congressman know that you vote no to GMO.
Even if organic, soy is naturally very high in glutamate and excitotoxins. The processing to create soy protein isolate makes it even more toxic, and it is an unfermented soy product.  Per Dr. Russell Blaylock, unfermented soy should be consumed no more than 2x weekly, preferably with a side dish of sea kelp to counter the excitotoxins with anti-oxidants.
When people use a daily protein or meal replacement shake, or TWO, for meal replacement or for weight loss, and it is soy based- they are adding a LOT of excitoxins, glutamate, and acid-based foods to their regimen.  On the outside one cannot see what that is doing to a body on the inside, but from all I have read - I wouldn't want to go there.

Whey can be a better option - but only if it is made from milk from grass fed cows free of anti-biotics, etc. AND only if it is cold processed, as again, heat and processing changes the molecular structure and we end up with FRANKENfood. Like all dairy products, whey protein isolates fall on the acidic side of the pH scale - key is for balance between acid and alkaline based foods. Even organic origin whey is inflammatory - as are all animal food products. Inflammation contributes to  disease, cancer, and general unwell-ness.

No matter what shake you choose, know your source and trust that raw goods are tested for purity. Protein shakes have made news headlines on more than one occasion due to traces of heavy metals, arsenic, and more. You might be surprised to learn that some of your favorite, popular brands do not pass the testing for purity.  With protein shakes you truly get what you pay for.
Artificial ingredients can be problematic for your body to excrete. They build up inside.  My chiropractor shared with me that he sees an increase in kidney stones come February as many people, wanting to lose weight, hop on board a well advertised weight watching diet plan that includes their brand of canned shakes.  Don't be fooled by "Sucralose" - another name for toxic Splenda.  I looked up ingredients in a very popular whey based shake advocated by a health and wellness company to learn that it contains sucralose. Also, if Stevia is being used make sure it is raw Stevia and not the RebA processed version. Note to those adding Truvia to your coffee - it is not "healthy".

An interview with neurosurgeon, Dr. Russell Blaylock, discusses the adverse affects of artificial ingredients and effects of hydrolyzed soy proteins, and as Blaylock states, you will never learn the truth about milk in the media. Suffice to say is, that although I am the daughter of a dairy farmer, I will not give my children store bought milk. I encourage you to learn much more about this by checking out the Natural News interview with Blaylock here.

If you are going to jump in on a 24, 28 or 30 day program, and you are going to incorporate shakes as a part of the program - do your own diligence and analyze the product.  As I said, I have no doubt you can lose weight from any one brand. The question I am putting forth is, "while you are losing weight for outward appearances, what is happening on the inside on a cellular level?"  Feeling your best begins from within. If your meals are costing you around a buck, it would actually make me question the ingredients and quality. Good health into your senior years requires thinking not of short term, but instead long term effects, of your food choices.

I find it interesting when people state they cannot afford a $2 meal replacement shake.  Years ago I did the math, thinking the same thing - so I can relate.. until I realized I was actually paying more for my breakfast, which either required I cook it (time must be factored in), or I stop enroute to work and get it. I can tell you a latte alone, or a travel mug of organic coffee, costs more than $2. Of course the meals after breakfast become even more expensive.  Three of the four of us drink a pea/brown rice/cranberry based pure and safe protein meal replacement shake for our breakfast - and it has actually been beneficial for our family budget. Not only do we save, but we are getting nutrients, anti-oxidants, minerals, and all essential amino acids as we start off our day.

I hope this day finds you feeling and living great!

To your health,
Rita S.

"BEST EVER" Gluten Free Banana Bread

"Best ever mom - next time bake at least two loaves ...you gotta!"
Ok, they didn't say please, but their enthusiasm over my latest gluten-free baking accomplishment was please enough!
The recipe starts with the one found on the backside of a package of Bob's Red Mill All Purpose Baking Flour. However, I have been having success in substituting half of what is asked for with almond flour, which in my opinion results in a better tasting baked product.
Granted, I haven't been doing 100s of recipes with this substitution, as overall I bake very little, but I do know that Bob's GF Baking Flour has a bean base and too much of it makes your baked goods taste a little beany, and some what strange.
If you are doing the 30 Day Elimination plan to kick off your new year - this is a great alternative when you are giving up gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, etc.  Our children loved it so much that all I managed to get were two slices shortly after it came out of the oven, and my husband didn't get a single nibble.  Did I mention we have a teenage boy in the house?

Gluten Free Banana Bread
1/3 cup organic coconut oil (brought to liquid – melts at approx. 72 degrees)
2/3 c packed brown sugar OR 1/3 c. raw organic agave nectar OR 2/3 c. organic granulated coconut sugar
1 t. pure vanilla extract
3 brown free range eggs (eggs don't range, but the chickens that laid them do!)
1 cup Bob’s Red Mill GF Baking Flour*
¾ c. almond flour*
2 tsp. GF baking powder or use substitute blend below
1.5 tsp. Korintje cinnamon
½ tsp. fine Celtic sea salt
1 tsp Xanthum gum
1.5 cups mashed banana (2 large or 3 smaller)

Whisk first four ingredients together in large bowl.  Slowly fold and work in dry ingredients.  Add crushed walnuts or pecans if desired.  Bake in 9x5 bread loaf pan, greased with coconut oil, at 350 degrees for 45 min.

Gluten Free Baking Powder Substitute
·           1/3 cup baking soda
·     2/3 cup cream of tartar
·     2/3 cup arrowroot

Below are links to the products in my gluten-free pantry below.  An asterisk in the recipe above means that you can find these products at Willy Street Co-op if you are local to Madison, Wisconsin.  Almond flour can be purchased in bulk, so you can take as much or little as you want. Amazon offers a few products individually packaged, but where you have to buy four of one item you may want to split with a friend, depending upon how  much you bake.
Almond flour (great tasting baked goods and breakfast crepes)
Arrowroot Powder (thickening and binding agent – great for sauces and soups)

Another product I just ordered for my gluten free baking pantry is Tapioca Flour to go with the gluten free Teff flour I already have. I noticed the two are simultaneously  used together in almost every recipe, so I need the tapioca flour to utilize my Teff.

I hope you will try this banana bread. It is super moist which is what made it so good. I am not sure what I did the first/last time I made a gluten free version of banana bread, but it was almost on the dry side and not nearly so good.  I did use a bit more banana than what the recipe asked for, perhaps, but all I knew was I had three browning bananas and I needed to use them all up!

To your health and healthy baking!

One Week to 30 Day Healthy Living Challenge

We are one week away from starting our 30 Days to Healthy Living Challenge. So far team TnT is 10 members strong.  More may be joining us - you are most welcome no matter where you live.  You are welcome to invite friends to join you, and the rest of us, in your journey to Healthier living.

TnT stands for TRANSFORMATION not TEMPTATION.  If you are participating in the challenge I would surmise that you desire transformation of some type- whether it be weight loss, increased energy, less joint pain - transformation is desired.  "Not Temptation" signifies the importance of resisting temptation during the 30 days  as many of us with have withdrawal symptoms from sugars, simple carbs, caffeine, and snacking after 7 pm.

NOW is the time to consume allergenic foods excluded from the program - either eat them, give them away, or have a New Year's Eve party so guests can consume. The  most difficult food to give up, from what I hear over and over, is CHEESE.  Yes, we are from Wisconsin and this is tough - but important. Remember, we cannot be tempted to eat that which is not in our presence.

NOW is the time to start putting your grocery list together comprised of very very few processed foods (exception of canned beans, tomatoes, gluten free crackers, gluten free, GMO FREE corn tortillas for guac dipping, and such).

NOW is the time to order any Arbonne Essentials products you plan to utilize.  In order for products to be in hand by Jan. 2 your orders would need to be placed by tomorrow, Dec. 27.  Most of you, if not all of you, are all "equipped for success" in this regard. The fewer products you have the more will power that may be required of you - depending upon your current eating habits. For example, those already drinking lots of water can continue to do so whereas those who drink diet sodas, and/or coffees, will benefit from the Fizz Sticks to replace the craving fro coffee/soda sourced caffeine.

Learn to read labels - I will be sending out an article soon to my team members that I had written last January for the community group I led and taught for making healthier food shopping choices. I am sure if you dig in my archives you will find a couple of posts on label reading.

If you are ALL IN the challenge here are the foods you want to eliminate Jan. 2 through 31:
1. wheat/gluten (if using organic rolled oats be sure it is gluten free)
2. dairy/casein/whey
3. yeast
4. sugar
5. artificial sweeteners
6. alcohol
7. Vinegar (EXCEPT for Bragg's organic apple cider vinegar)
8. Caffeine (coffee and soda are out!)
9. Soy products, including soy cause (tamari may be used in stead of soy sauce as it is MSG and gluten free)

I plan to go into the whys and what fors of these foods in further detail, although my blog archives likely have them covered already.

Someone asked me about vinegar today and why it is off limits - basically it has to do with the fermentation process that takes place in the gut as a result, growth of yeast, etc.  Note that an exception is made for Bragg's Apple Cider organic vinegar...  This means the homemade raspberry vinagrette I made on the 22nd is OK during the program!

The Thursday evening, December 27 call in number to listen to the Kick off presentation live at 6:30 pm  is 712-451-6000 and enter in access code 709364 followed by the # sign to listen live to the presentation. Being there in person is best as you can sample various food recipes put together for us.  If you cannot do either please contact me for a dial in number that you can listen to as time allows.

Food Pyramids - Go Green!

People want to know, "what did you do to lose weight and keep it off?"  Quite simply, I made a LIFESTYLE CHANGE.  Diet is not in my vocabulary.  I did not eliminate all carbs, nor did I pump up, and plump out, on enormous amounts of meat.  I did not become a vegetarian, nor did I head to the south beach.
COMMON SENSE.  That's really it, in a nut shell. (Nuts are GOOD FATS, by the way!)  I did not read a diet book, join a club, or a program in which I had to weigh in weekly or pay a fee to have someone tell me what I should and should not eat. I DID NOT count calories, and the health newsletters I read would totally agree with that.   We need calories - but there are good calories, bad calories.  Our bodies NEED FUEL - good energy.    Green food is fuel for your body, consume lots of brown food, sugars, simple carbs and you may as well be pouring battery acid in. Okay, maybe that's an extreme analogy - but acidic food is TOXIC food and promotes ill health and disease.
Check out the Healthy Living Cheat Sheet below. If you need a jump start to healthier living this guide has helped 100s of people.  Most of us have addictions, and we don't even know it. We are addicted to sugar - no less a drug in our body than perhaps a weed. Caffeine, akin to alcohol. Simple carbs - another word for "joint pain".  Artificial sweeteners - have you seen the commercial of the egg frying on hot pavement "this is your brain on drugs?" - well, don't be fooled by your diet sodas - it is pretty much an equivalent to frying your brain cells!
You may think this a little harsh, but the truth can be just that.  I am not saying you need to curb all your addictions at once...I backed off more slowly, 50%, then 75% and now I would say I eat alkaline about 85-90% of the time. I did not do a 30 Day Detox until I had already lost 62 lbs, and at the end of those thirty days I had lost 16 more!
For some - a jump start - cold turkey on all the allergenic foods in Step 1 are the only way to go. Those with serious addictions will likely experience headaches by day three. BUT if you stick with it, by the end of the first week you are going to feel SO MUCH BETTER!
If you can eat clean and green you may not need to incorporate a vegan (pea. brown rice, cranberry) protein shake - whch is pH correct for your body, into your lifestyle. For myself, I needed a convenience button and the Essentials shake fit my needs, not to mention I made up some pretty delicious concoctions! Dessert for breakfast-  I like that very much! (LOL)

I did not create the plate diagram above, but I do want to clarify the protein section. This does not mean an 8 oz steak every day, taking up 1/4 of your plate is acceptable! Dr. Russel Blaylock stated, in one of his newsletters, that  12 oz of red meat is all we need in ONE WEEK! Research is showing that iron toxicity is prevalent in almost all forms of cancer. And if you are not eating grass fed, organic beef....well then, forget it if you think you are eating healthy. Paleo people - be warned that excessive amount of MEAT is acidic and cancer cells thrive on an acidic state of being. There are plenty of low carbers out there who also think they can eat meat to their hearts desire and not have ill effects. Yes, you may lose weight initially, and perhaps permanently if it keeps you off the sugars and simple carbs, but people who eat healthy get cancer, too. I would almost be inclined to say that vegetarians perhaps have it down right, regarding healthy eating. But unbeknownst to many of them - SOY is not a HEALTH FOOD.  Not by the time it goes through American processing (which makes the end product acidic). GMO is an entire issue with soy, and even organic soy absorbs more trace metals from the ground than any other plant in the plant kingdom.
More than 50%, I would even suggest to make 75% of your plate GREEN. Healthy nut choices can be included in that. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil on your salad. Cut up half a lean chicken breast to go with your salad, and add some fresh fruit to your salad to brighten the flavors. It is amazing how vibrant and delicious a salad becomes when you add a variety of toppings to your dark green GREENS (iceburg lettuce is NOT a health food - avoid it as it equals empty calories).
And for the record, unless I am detoxing I treat myself...if you have behaved all week long, made healthy choices and stuck with it - by all means go out and treat yourself to a mocha, a scoop of ice cream, or a couple pieces of dark chocolate.  Depraved people have been known to eat an entire quart of ice cream or bag of chips in one sitting - don't do this to yourself.  Rewards - it's all about feeling better, having  more energy, and going GREEN!

To your health,
Rita S.

What's In Your Health Drink?

In a few days I will be sharing a talk on taking care of your liver - or more importantly, loving on your liver. We each only have one. The liver is the body's filtering system. Just as you would not let your furnace filter get totally clogged, nor would you want the city water treatment plant to not be operating to par - we need to ensure the filtering system that God created for our bodies - the LIVER, is loved on and not taxed, which leads to disease and illness.
Come to learn more on Sunday at Crossroads Coffeehouse from 3-5 pm as we kick of a community group - Vitality 2012.

Today is a couple thoughts about beverages...now, I am referring to health drinks. Not soda, and not even energy drinks, as both are the opposite of health drinks.
This is a complete cut and paste, and wish I could remember from whom I found this - but I do believe it was Dr. Mercola's web site although I JUST downloaded 4 Myths- Sick, Tired, Fat by Dr. Kresser (another web site I just subscribed to) and he reiterates the same thing.
------------------------------
4 health drinks to avoid

Here are 4 of the top so-called "healthy" offenders:
NUMBER 1: 100% "Natural" fruit juice
Surprised?
Ok. Yes. Fruit juice is a better choice than drinking fake high-fructose corn syrup juice … but … it's still a truck-load of calories per ounce of liquid.
On top of that, it has almost all of the blood sugar regulating fiber stripped out of the fruit—this means the natural fruit sugars will trigger insulin surges and send your blood sugar soaring into the diabetic range!
NOT what you want at all.
This is a BIG one because most parents think fruit juice is a "healthy" choice for their children … but … the science shows it's definitely not.
In a study* of 4 to 12 year old children researchers from Deakin University found children who drank more than two glasses (500ml) of fruit juice/drinks per day were more likely to be overweight or obese.
"These odds increased as the amounts of fruit juice/drink consumed increased," Dr Sanigorski said. "Children who drank more than three glasses of soft drink (three quarters of a litre/750ml) or 4 glasses of fruit juice/drinks (1 litre) on the day in question were more than twice as likely to be overweight or obese compared with children who did not drink these drinks."
So the best thing to do is keep fruit juices far out of the hands of our children.
But it's not just the kids who fall prey to these health wrecking Trojan horses—adults fall for it too!
In fact, one particular juice is extremely dangerous for ANY man to consume …
Can you guess what it is?
100% Pure Orange Juice.
Why?
Orange Juice is rich in IRON
… which is potentially toxic if your blood levels become too high.
The reason men have to worry about consuming too much orange juice (as little as two big glasses each day) is because we men don't menstruate each month … … And that means we lack an efficient method of clearing excess iron from our blood each month.
Yes.
The "healthy" glass of orange juice you're having at breakfast not only spikes your insulin levels into diabetic ranges (which … along with your energy … will come plummeting down later in the morning) …
… But if you're a man it can also be loading your body with a potentially dangerous heavy metal.
Not good.
So with all this in mind …
It's a much better idea to EAT fruit the way nature intended, with all of the fiber intact, and use a whole foods base multi-vitamin/antioxidant supplement to get enough of the super-nutrients contained in fruit juice.
Let's move onward …

NUMBER 2: Soy Milk
This used to be an often recommended "healthy" alternative to milk …
The truth is:
Most soy products these days are heavily processed with little nutrient density… and … this includes most soy milk you see at the grocery store.
Without question, most soy milk has become too sugary and is controlled by the same food and beverage giants that are still manufacturing and marketing other products that promote degenerative disease.
What's more: high levels of soy consumption have been linked with un-naturally high levels of estrogen production in both men and women …
For men this is death to your sex drive, decreased sperm production and could cause problems such as gynecomastia (abnormal enlargement of men's breasts) …
… For women, even though estrogen is considered a "female sex hormone" … like most anything … too much of it is also bad.
Estrogen dominance has been linked to thyroid disruption, a host of autoimmune diseases and some research questions the connection to hormone sensitive cancers such as breast cancer.
Your best bet? Just avoid it.
And whatever you do, if you are raising a small child, do not feed your child soy-based breast milk replacement products …
… Hopefully, the potential dangers of this commonly accepted practice are evident now.
That said, not all soy is bad …
The only soy based food I have found that is in it's fairly natural state is edamame (green vegetable soypods found at most high-end Japanese restaurants).
Keep in mind I still eat it VERY rarely if I'm dining out or added to a healthy stir fry using walnut, macadamia nut or grapeseed oil.
Speaking of dining out … here's one to REALLY avoid …

NUMBER 3: Crappuccinos
Ok, I mean Cappuccino, but I'm really referring to those high priced gourmet coffee drinks.
While black coffee can help you burn fat because the caffeine content gives your metabolism a slight boost, these tempting coffee calorie hogs can hide up to 1,000 calories!
In one drink!
YES … you are correct … that's insane!
Still craving one of these gourmet coffee drinks?
You can make your own fat-burning version pretty easily:
You'll start by spooning sugar-free, nonfat vanilla yogurt in an ice cube tray and freezing it into cubes overnight.
Then you'll add them to a blender with a splash of organic fat-free milk, a teaspoon of instant coffee crystals, and a scoop of natural vanilla or chocolate whey protein powder.
Lastly, just sprinkle on some cinnamon to add a little fat-burning kick. If you want to cut down on the caffeine, just use decaffeinated instant coffee instead.
This will taste so good that you'll swear it isn't good for you, but it definitely is … and … it's much lower calories than those commercial brands!
Plus, the added protein will give your metabolism a good nudge and help to power your muscles throughout the day.
And last but not least, here is …

NUMBER 4: Zero Calorie Flavored Waters
The good news is these are 0 calories.
That's where the good news stops though …
… most of these still use questionable artificial sweeteners which have been shown to inhibit fat burning, increase appetite, and block the absorption of nutrients into your body in a variety of studies.
Don't be too bummed out though…
A couple of 0 cal flavored drinks use the all-natural stevia plant as a sweetener, include Zevia (a stevia based soft drink), and the 0 cal varieties of Sobe Lifewater for example.
So your best bet?
If you need a little more taste than water every once in a while—look for one of the brands I just mentioned …
… Or … you could always squeeze some lemon in water and maybe add a natural sweetener like stevia to satisfy your taste buds.
So now that you know some top diet drink disasters to avoid … and … you know a few good alternatives to popular "health" drinks.
----------------
I hope you found that information helpful. Today, for the first time ever I drank more than half my body weight in ounces! I drank a 32 oz bottle of body cleansing solution mixed with water and was done by 10 am! I then managed two more 32 oz bottles during the day. At bible study I drank a large mug of detox tea, and two protein shakes. I should be floating!

I do feel more skinny and my pants are loose - celebrating my little moment in the spotlight as the top person in a privage Biggest Loser challene I am a part of.

to your health!

Foods that Feed Cancer

Yesterday I offered up foods with choice nutrients that can actually thwart cancer cells. Previous to that my post on Monday was in regards to inflammation being a huge contributor to disease, including cancer. Today’s post will discuss foods to avoid – foods that are highly inflammatory and/or contain elements that promote cancer cell growth. Foods that cancer cells LOVE. Foods that give cancer sells fuel and give cancer energy. Obviously, if you have cancer...this is not the food reaction you are seeking in your cells.
TOP TEN FOODS TO AVOID if you wish to maintain a healthful state include:
1. Cow’s milk and cheese
2. Vegetable oils
3. Processed foods
4. Beef or beef products
5. Soy
6. Sugar
7. Artificial Sweeteners & Dyes
8. MSG
9. Fluoridated Water
10. Gelatin
Perhaps a bit of elaboration will help you understand why some of these foods, marketed as healthy choices, are found on this list.
Dairy in highly inflammatory – no other way around it. In regards to a need for calcium, as on researcher put it – elephants and giraffes, and even cows, don’t grow up and continue on a diet of milk once weaned. Pure water…it does a body good. Calcium is derived from many plant sources, including almonds and kale. Almond milk is the drink of choice in our home.
Vegetable oils – and “fat friend or foe” post will be forthcoming, but you can search for that on my blog to learn more right now about Omega 6 vs. Omega 3 fats.
Processed foods – do I need to say more? MSG, nitrates, petro-chemicals… our very existence as American people relying on processed foods contributes to our being the most unhealthy country in the world, with highest cancer rates of all, and epidemics of obesity and type II diabetes.
Iron, essential for cancer cell growth, is one of the main reasons beef is on that list. Most of us have no problems getting enough iron. Iron is essential for cell division and cancer cells divide like wildfire – red meat consumption basically fuels that fire. I bet the Paleo diet followers will have a hard time with this one…but there are other sources of meat besides red meat. Also, processed meats (your sandwich convenience products, spreads, frozen chicken bits, etc.) are high in nitrates, which also contribute to cancer. Avoid supplements with iron – unless you are anemic. You can have the ferritin levels in your blood measured for an iron count. Higher levels indicate cancer is spreading.
Soy – don’t be fooled, but chances are you have been fooled by years through a great marketing program by the agriculture administration. The majority of soybeans harvested for our grocery products in this country are GMO (genetically modified), which is one reason to avoid soy. Soy is high in glutamate – which is a powerful stimulant of cancer growth and invasion. Third, but not last…soy plants absorb more fluoride from the ground than any other plant in the plant kingdom. Fluoride when ingested, is toxic. Another topic worthy of its own daily discussion.
Sugar – high glycemic index foods are fuel for cancer cells. When you have cancer you absolutely want to avoid eating fruits high in sugar, which include bananas, strawberries, grapes, black and raspberries, melons – although these foods contain anti-cancer nutrients, once you have cancer – sugar is the last thing you want to fuel the cells with. Think about what a “sugar high” does to our kids…it makes our cancer cells bounce of the walls just as well. High glycemic carbs such as white bread, muffins, white pasta, white rice, white potatoes, bagels, cakes, and more...are also metabolized as table sugar in our bodies.
Artificial Sweeteners & Dyes…search “aspartame” in my search field – or “diet soda”. Aspartame not only kills brain cells, cancer cells love it! Were you reading my blog back when I said I had a 2 page, 2 column handout in my hand listing all the side effects of aspartame? I provided a link at the time, don't know if you can still access that site however, as it was a part of one of my subscriptions. I don’t know about you, but seeing that particular list pretty much axed any desire I would ever have for a diet soda. Regarding food dyes - both yellow and red dyes are petro-chemical based. I have posted about this previously as well. Petro-chemicals mask themselves as estrogen in our body. It acts like a "fake estrogen" and 80% of all breast cancers, as an example, are from too much estrogen. Many countries in Europe have banned artificial colors from their processed foods, but not here in the U.S. Supply and demand, as long as we keep buying they'll keep making it as it is...essentially poison to our bodies.
MSG – have posted about that previously as well, but as I mentioned above, it is a powerful stimulant to cancer cells.
Fluoridated water – it is time the American Dental Association reads up on some current research vs. the old, flawed studies by which the fluoride push came. I may have quoted these studies yesterday in regards to grapes, but it bears repeating. Fluoride has been shown to increase cancer growth and bone cancer by 600% in young men. Towns with fluoridated water systems have a 10% higher cancer rate than those without. Again, praise God my family lives on the outskirts of town and have well water. (Although I have a concern about nitrates with the hill above our well, being a former pasture for cows.) If you live in a town serving up fluoridated water, it is recommended you buy bottled or utilize a reverse osmossis filtration system. Washing your produce in fluoridated water rather defeats your purpose as well.
Gelatin, almost always made up of neural cow components and high in MSG and fluoride, is predominant as casings for our supplements and vitamins, not to mention it is found in many desserts. Be aware. We utilize a vegan Omega 3 supplement at our home (to encapsulate the oils) with a plant based casing, and I was quick to throw out the gummy bear type vitamins the kids were using after I learned this.
The Top Ten above is listed in any particular order. Chances are you consume some more than others, and perhaps you eat zero of one- which is great. For cancer prevention, make it a goal to eliminate or severely cut back on the amount of foods you eat that contain the “top ten to avoid” list.

To your health,
Rita S.
