A great resource site for cancer

Hi All,
I have had such a busy month - doing more class presenations and getting the word out on steps one can take to help live healthier and hopefully cancer free; rather than post each day as I had hoped.
Just a bit ago a cancer survivor friend from the warm southwest sent me an email. She was thrilled to stock up on her Re9 products so she could feel good about what she was putting on her skin - I remember when she first started using the products and how they helped revive her dry and damaged skin ...after effects of chemo and cancer treatment.
She also sent me a link to an on line article, from a site that she as a cancer survivor must frequent for the latest updates and news on overcoming cancer. For these remaining hours in October, I thought I would share the link here. I encourage you to poke around the site and read up on the various articles, especially the one on progesterone.
I hope to look into the mission statement and organization of this group a bit more and find out if it may be another consideration for prevention donation.
I hope you find useful info on this site as I did!
To your health,
Rita

Healthful Butternut Squash Soup!

A few weeks ago my parents brought me some fresh butternet squash from their garden...and I have been itching to experiment with making soup. When our bible study cancelled due to the "Come to the Well" tour, it provided me an opportunity to do just that.
It's important to know that I am the ONLY one in my family who likes squash. So when my husband and son both say "it's not my favorite, but I would eat it again", I consider that a victory. I even worked turmeric into this as it has so many anti-cancer fighting properties, and decided to extol the benefits of many of the ingredients below.
Overall I thought my soup turned out well, although not as thick as it was when I had it this fall at a little diner. I am not sure what was used to thicken the soup, but do know that the things I used to use to make creamy soups, aka "cream of ___" this or that, are processed cans of unhealthiness and I steer clear of them now. Primarily we now have only broth based type soups at our home. This soup, however, is creamy and delicious.
I will add that when I googled a recipe for butternut squash soup - there are lots of varieties and comments. I tend to read the comments and take note of the things I would like. I also substituted healthier choices in my ingredients...and just for my readers, here it is:

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP
1/2 large onion
1/2 red bell pepper
1 T extra virgin olive oil
16 oz organic chicken stock
12 oz almond milk
4 cups cooked butternut squash
1 t. ground ginger
1 t. ground cinnamon
1/2 t. turmeric
1/2 t. nutmeg
3/4 c. plain probiotic yogurt (optional)
Grated Parmesan Reggiano (optional)

Chop onoin and pepper fine in food processor, saute in EVOO, with turmeric, until onions are translucent. Set aside.
Add broth to soup pot.
In blender pureee 2 cups cooked squash with 6 oz. almond milk, add to soup kettle. Repeat.
Stir in onions and peppers, as well as spices. Simmer until heated through.
Add 3/4 cup plain yogurt. Stir. Heat through once more.
Serve - garnish with grated cheese or red pepper slice, or a few sprigs of thyme.
Note: Omit dairy if lactose intolerant.

Nutritional Info:
Turmeric and onion
both have anti-cancer nutrients. Onion can help relieve abdominal pain. Studies show that the antioxidants in turmeric kill cultures of cancer cells from the skin, bloodstream, and ovaries (but note that it must be mixed with extra virgin olive oil for the body to untilize those anti-oxidants).
EVOO prrovides beneficial Omega 3s for brain, heart, circulation and joint health.
Almond milk provides an abundance of magnesium (which most Americans tend to be deficient on), calcium, Vit. B12, D, zinc and more (with no cholesterol)
Butternut squash, rich in carotenes, provide a very good source of vitamins B1, B6 and C, folic acid, niacin, pantothenic acid, fiber, and potassium.
Red bell peppers also provide carotenes and much of the same nutritents as the squash, but in addition provide important phytochemicals such as chlorogenic acid, zeaxanthin, and coumeric acid. In addition, red bell peppers have one of the highest concentrations of lycopene which protects against cancer and heart disease, and even cataracts.
Cinnamon helps control insulin
Ginger contains properties to help lower cholesterol levels, and relieve allergies, asthma, arthritis, colds, and nausea. Nutmeg helps relieve or prevent flatulence, and to break up chest congestion
Probiotic live culture yogurt can help aid in digestion.

Hope you have a chance to make this while the squashes are most fresh! I baked my squash, scooped out the good stuff and froze it for soup making this winter as well.

To your health!

Chicken & Cancer Fighting Spices

Our family had a delicious dinner this evening...Chicken Korma. I found a recipe and adapted it for the slo cooker to accomodate our Tuesday evening of Stephen Ministry, piano lessons and Girl Scouts - run, run, run! (LOL)
Because I adapted it for the slo cooker organic chicken broth was added to the original recipe. I have already mentioned in previous blogs, the cancer fighting properties of curcumin and turmeric, both of which are included.
I will provide my slo cooker version, since I have not tried and tested the original, for which I made a few adaptions.

Easy Chicken Korma
In a slo cooker pour 2 cups of organic chicken stock or broth. (although I think one cup may have been enough)
1 large onion coarsley chopped

Brush 6-8 organic chicken breasts with extra virgin olive oil, and lay on top of onion

On top of chicken:
5 T. mango chutney (I incorporated my peach/mango salsa from Costco)
4 large garlic cloves, pressed
1 t. coarse sea salt

Spices to make garam masala:
1 t. black pepper
1 t. curcumin
2 t. cardamom
2. t. cinnamon
1/2 t. ground cloves
2. t. turmeric
1/4 t. chili powder

Blend spices in a small bowl and sprinkle over top of chicken breasts. Cover and cook on low heat setting for 8-10 hrs.

About one hour before serving add in PLAIN yogurt - approximately 6 T., stir. Use two forks to pull apart chicken breasts into chunks.
Serve over a bed of brown rice, top with sliced almonds if desired.
This dish packed a lot of flavor. If you enjoy heat, simply increase chili powder. Because it was cooked in the slo cooker there is a lot of flavorful liquid remaining. I recommend saving the broth as a base for a pot of chicken soup because it is so delicious!
If you have recipes that incorproate turmeric or curcumin, both packed with anti cancer cell properties - please feel free to share them with me!
Enjoy!
To your health,
Rita S.

Say No To GMO Foods, Buy Organic

Yesterday I posted a list found at http://www.hormonewell.com/ - a list that can help you AVOID cancer. Now granted, there are some things on that list we cannot control... city parks departments spraying our children's play parks with herbicides, water treatment facilities inability to remove HRT chemicals from waste...or can we? Think about that one.
The first item on the list is BUY ORGANIC. Now, my intention today was to "skip over organic" as I have covered this previously, and focus on #2 and #3 from the list. However, information I received yesterday is too important to share. So on we go...to organics.
Yes, organics do cost more. If more of us would do it the law of supply and demand would bring the price down. Redirect your spending. If you cut back or eliminate the processed foods, that contribute to cancer in the first place, and use that money towards organic - it's a wash - and everyone in your family is healthier because of it.
Previously I have provided a recipe for a produce was that you can use for all produce, non-organic and organic. It's important to know that pesticides and herbicides often get beneath the skin surface of your fruit, and as was mentioned the other day, California grapes are predominant in fluoride, which is a contaminant in the fertlizer used on the crops.
Just yesterday Dr. Mercola's web site sent out a video informing us about genetically modified fruits and vegetables that are "manufactured" to resist Roundup herbicide. How can they do this? Per Mercola,"The vast majority of processed foods containing corn, soy, or canola, or any derivative thereof, are made from genetically modified 'Roundup Ready' crops, which have never been proven safe for human consumption."
The detrimental effects of Roundup are well documented. You can read more about one such report here. In fact, if you have ever used the product (yes, guilty!!!) the warning label speaks volumes. If you have it in your shed or garage - go read the label!
Argentina is a huge grower of Roundup resistant soy beans, a GMO food, andis a huge contributor to the U.S. processed food manufacturers. But GMO is not only found outside our borders... The report continues, "Unfortunately for American consumers, the United States is a major grower of genetically modified crops. For example, in the US, over 90 percent of all canola grown is GM Roundup Ready canola, as is about 90 percent of US soybeans, and about 70 percent of all corn and cotton. And according to the featured report, industry and regulators KNEW that glyphosate causes deformities as early as the 1980's, but withheld the information from the public…"
Common GMO foods include:
-Soy (clever "healthful" marketing has done a good job at deceiving us about his product, which goes beyond GMOs)
-Sugar from sugar beets
-Corn
-Hawaiian papaya
-Cottonseed (used in vegetable cooking oils)
-Canola (canola oil)
-Some varieties of zuchinni
-Crookneck squash

You can find a Say No To GMO shopping guide here.
In your own home, you can:
1. Avoid using glyphosate-containing weed killers on your lawn and garden, and...
2. Buy organic foods to avoid both genetically modified crops and agricultural chemicals like glyphosate.
I feel it is important for my readers to know that I have personally verified with the company I work for that NONE of the ingredients used in any of our products, whether it be nutrition or skincare, are dervied from genetically modified plants. I am proud to work for a company that was green before green was cool, 32 year history of GREEN.

How To Avoid Faux Estrogens

This evening I am spending some time gathering links to articles and information that can be of benefit to a friend's friend who recently found "a lump" and is scheduled for a biopsy this coming week. In doing so, I came across a new resource that I wish to share with all my readers.
I encourage you to check out the site, and I wish to give this site credit for the information I am sharing below, as it is a direct cut and paste.
It has already been established that if you live in the United States or other industrialized nation, you are exposed to foreign hormones (xenohormones) every day. These can be absorbed into your system by digestion, inhalation, or direct skin contact.
There are simple steps everyone can take to protect themselves from estrogen mimickers found in xenohormones (chemicals) and phytoestrogens (certain foods and plants). I recommend that you:
1. Buy organic foods when at all possible. If you can’t go all the way for any reason, avoid hormone treated meats and poultry at all costs.
2. Drink filtered water. Researchers worldwide have observed fish switching gender due to the high level of effluent estrogen in the water. The problem is attributed to high levels of synthetic hormones excreted by women using synthetic HRT or on birth control pills. Our water treatment facilities are not designed to remove hormonal pollutants.
3. Throw away all pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.
4. Throw away all cosmetics that have toxic ingredients and switch to organic or “clean” cosmetics.
5. Throw away all nail polish and nail polish removers.
6. Use organic soaps and toothpastes.
7. Don’t use fabric softeners as they put petrochemicals right onto your skin.
8. Use only naturally based perfumes. Most perfumes are petrochemically based.
9. Do not drink beverages from plastic bottles. All plastic leaches xenoestrogens into the environment.
10. Do not microwave food in plastic containers and avoid using plastic wrap to cover food for microwaving.
11. Wash your food well to rid it of pesticides.
12. Beware of noxious fumes given off by carpets, copiers and printers, nail & hair salons.

Fats - Friends & Foes

This month I have been blogging about cancer prevention, and in the past 48 hrs have shared foods to eat and foods to avoid. There is a group of foods that warrants its own posting – something we consume daily in one form or another. That being…FAT.
Let’s start by making a recommendation of the GOOD FATS, the friendly fats, you should have in your kitchen…
• Extra Virgin Olive Oil
• Coconut Oil
• CLA
EVOO. Here’s a bit of interesting trivia for you…people on the island of Crete consume huge amounts of extra virgin olive oil. In addition, they have one of the highest populations in all of Europe. Yet, they have the lowest lung cancer rates.
What’s going on? Isn’t that what you’re thinking? It went through my mind as well. As it turns out EVOO inhibits the HER-2/neugene. In essence, extra virgin olive oil has the same effects on cancer cells as the drug Herceptin, without the side effects or complications.
In regards to cooking with EVOO, adding a touch of turmeric to the pan when heating the oil for cooking will prevent free radicals from forming.
Coconut oil contains anti cancer flavonoids – a medium chain triglyceride (MCT). Dr. Blaylock recommends cancer patients take 1 T. per day, not only for its anti-cancer effects, but because it also has an anti weight loss effect. Often times it is recommended to cancer patients to eat bananas, however, because this fruit is packed with sugar it feeds the cancer cells. Other nutrients cancer patients can ingest to help prevent weight loss are Vitamin E, succinate and curcumin.
CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) dramatically reduces breast, colon and perhaps even prostrate cancer. It reduces inflammation, and literally melts away visceral fat, which is the fat around the abdomen that encases our vital organs and contributes to many diseases. An effective dose is 1,000 mg a day per Blaylock’s March 2007 Wellness Report. You can obtain CLA naturally from milk or meat from grass-fed cows, however, both are on the “do not” list with dairy being inflammatory and beef contributing to iron overdose.
FAT FOENumber one fat foe is Omega 6 oils. These include those we often see marketed as healthy, vegetable oils. I have blogged about Omega 6 before, but point blank – Americans get too much of this in our diets. It is highly inflammatory, and promotes the spread and invasion of cancers. Omega 6 fats can convert some types of cancers into a very aggressive variety. If you have cancer – avoid Omega 6 fats! Unfortunately it is found in just about all our processed foods. This is not to say Omega 6 is not necessary in our body, it is, but for healthy maintenance the ratio of Omega 3 to 6 is supposed to be 4 or 6 to 1, but in the typical American diet wet get a ratio of 6-10 Omega 6s to one Omega 3.
I would encourage you to pare down your kitchen pantry to utilize primarily EVOO and/or coconut oil. We primarily use EVOO in our home. When baking muffins did you know you can substitute vegetable oil for applesauce - even exchange? Add turmeric to EVOO when pan searing. For baking use coconut oil (which comes in a jar, with the viscosity of lard), or organic butter from grass fed cows – a little good fat butter is better than choosing canola.

Foods that Feed Cancer

Yesterday I offered up foods with choice nutrients that can actually thwart cancer cells. Previous to that my post on Monday was in regards to inflammation being a huge contributor to disease, including cancer. Today’s post will discuss foods to avoid – foods that are highly inflammatory and/or contain elements that promote cancer cell growth. Foods that cancer cells LOVE. Foods that give cancer sells fuel and give cancer energy. Obviously, if you have cancer...this is not the food reaction you are seeking in your cells.
TOP TEN FOODS TO AVOID if you wish to maintain a healthful state include:
1. Cow’s milk and cheese
2. Vegetable oils
3. Processed foods
4. Beef or beef products
5. Soy
6. Sugar
7. Artificial Sweeteners & Dyes
8. MSG
9. Fluoridated Water
10. Gelatin
Perhaps a bit of elaboration will help you understand why some of these foods, marketed as healthy choices, are found on this list.
Dairy in highly inflammatory – no other way around it. In regards to a need for calcium, as on researcher put it – elephants and giraffes, and even cows, don’t grow up and continue on a diet of milk once weaned. Pure water…it does a body good. Calcium is derived from many plant sources, including almonds and kale. Almond milk is the drink of choice in our home.
Vegetable oils – and “fat friend or foe” post will be forthcoming, but you can search for that on my blog to learn more right now about Omega 6 vs. Omega 3 fats.
Processed foods – do I need to say more? MSG, nitrates, petro-chemicals… our very existence as American people relying on processed foods contributes to our being the most unhealthy country in the world, with highest cancer rates of all, and epidemics of obesity and type II diabetes.
Iron, essential for cancer cell growth, is one of the main reasons beef is on that list. Most of us have no problems getting enough iron. Iron is essential for cell division and cancer cells divide like wildfire – red meat consumption basically fuels that fire. I bet the Paleo diet followers will have a hard time with this one…but there are other sources of meat besides red meat. Also, processed meats (your sandwich convenience products, spreads, frozen chicken bits, etc.) are high in nitrates, which also contribute to cancer. Avoid supplements with iron – unless you are anemic. You can have the ferritin levels in your blood measured for an iron count. Higher levels indicate cancer is spreading.
Soy – don’t be fooled, but chances are you have been fooled by years through a great marketing program by the agriculture administration. The majority of soybeans harvested for our grocery products in this country are GMO (genetically modified), which is one reason to avoid soy. Soy is high in glutamate – which is a powerful stimulant of cancer growth and invasion. Third, but not last…soy plants absorb more fluoride from the ground than any other plant in the plant kingdom. Fluoride when ingested, is toxic. Another topic worthy of its own daily discussion.
Sugar – high glycemic index foods are fuel for cancer cells. When you have cancer you absolutely want to avoid eating fruits high in sugar, which include bananas, strawberries, grapes, black and raspberries, melons – although these foods contain anti-cancer nutrients, once you have cancer – sugar is the last thing you want to fuel the cells with. Think about what a “sugar high” does to our kids…it makes our cancer cells bounce of the walls just as well. High glycemic carbs such as white bread, muffins, white pasta, white rice, white potatoes, bagels, cakes, and more...are also metabolized as table sugar in our bodies.
Artificial Sweeteners & Dyes…search “aspartame” in my search field – or “diet soda”. Aspartame not only kills brain cells, cancer cells love it! Were you reading my blog back when I said I had a 2 page, 2 column handout in my hand listing all the side effects of aspartame? I provided a link at the time, don't know if you can still access that site however, as it was a part of one of my subscriptions. I don’t know about you, but seeing that particular list pretty much axed any desire I would ever have for a diet soda. Regarding food dyes - both yellow and red dyes are petro-chemical based. I have posted about this previously as well. Petro-chemicals mask themselves as estrogen in our body. It acts like a "fake estrogen" and 80% of all breast cancers, as an example, are from too much estrogen. Many countries in Europe have banned artificial colors from their processed foods, but not here in the U.S. Supply and demand, as long as we keep buying they'll keep making it as it is...essentially poison to our bodies.
MSG have posted about that previously as well, but as I mentioned above, it is a powerful stimulant to cancer cells.
Fluoridated water – it is time the American Dental Association reads up on some current research vs. the old, flawed studies by which the fluoride push came. I may have quoted these studies yesterday in regards to grapes, but it bears repeating. Fluoride has been shown to increase cancer growth and bone cancer by 600% in young men. Towns with fluoridated water systems have a 10% higher cancer rate than those without. Again, praise God my family lives on the outskirts of town and have well water. (Although I have a concern about nitrates with the hill above our well, being a former pasture for cows.) If you live in a town serving up fluoridated water, it is recommended you buy bottled or utilize a reverse osmossis filtration system. Washing your produce in fluoridated water rather defeats your purpose as well.
Gelatin, almost always made up of neural cow components and high in MSG and fluoride, is predominant as casings for our supplements and vitamins, not to mention it is found in many desserts. Be aware. We utilize a vegan Omega 3 supplement at our home (to encapsulate the oils) with a plant based casing, and I was quick to throw out the gummy bear type vitamins the kids were using after I learned this.
The Top Ten above is listed in any particular order. Chances are you consume some more than others, and perhaps you eat zero of one- which is great. For cancer prevention, make it a goal to eliminate or severely cut back on the amount of foods you eat that contain the “top ten to avoid” list.

Rita S.

Foods to help PREVENT Cancer

Yesterday I talked about inflammation being a major contributor to cancer. In previous months I have talked about anti-inflammatory diets, which in turn tend to be hormonally balanced diets.
Since this month's focus is cancer PREVENTION, I will list foods known for their anti-oxidant, DNA repair nutrients.
Today will be part one -foods you SHOULD eat, and part two being foods you SHOULD NOT eat.
Certain foods are very high in cancer preventative nutrients. Tops on the list are:
• Broccoli
• Cauliflower
• Brussel Sprouts
• Kale
Other foods making the anti-cancer nutrient list are:
• Turnip Greens
• Mustard Greens
• Collards
• Cabbage (especially purple)
• Carrots
• Green & Red Peppers
• Onions
• Celery
• Parsley
• Eggplant
• Tomatoes
• Artichoke
• Cilantro
The most important fruits include:
- Cranberries
- Currants
- Blueberries
- Blackberries
- Raspberries
- Strawberries
- Apples (especially Macintosh)

Although you might expect to find grapes on the list for the anti-oxidant of reservatol, sadly California grown grapes, which is where most of ours come from, are high in fluoride. Fluoride is an insecticide (cryolite) sprayed on crops and recent studies show an increase cancer growth and bone cancer risk by 600% in young men. Communities with fluoridated water were 10% higher cancer rates than communities that are fluoride free. This topic alone requires a blog post on its own.
There are compounds in vegetables and fruits that neutralize cancer causing effects.
- Curcumin, found in the spice turmeric (must be dissolved in EVOO before consuming in order for body to absorb the preventative properties)
- ECGC (epigallocatechin gallate) found in green tea
- DHA – a compound of Omega 3s
- Glucosinaolate – found in cruciferous vegetables
Compounds in these foods naturally stimulate the body’s detoxification process.
It is important to note that the properties of these foods are recommended for cancer PREVENTION. If you already have cancer, you defintitely want to avoid sugary fruits, and even some vegetables - as sugar is fuel for cancer to grow and divide.
So there you have it! A few foods to help point you in the right direction on cancer prevention. There is lots more to come!

Inflammation - A True Cancer Promoter

If you go back through the archives of my blog, you are already familiar with the link to hormone imbalance and cancer. Estradiol, one of three types of the estrogen hormone in our bodies, is an aggressive bugger when it goes unchecked. How do our hormones become so out of balanced? Primarily, through the food we eat and the environment we live in.
For the next few posts I am going to focus on food choices - the fuel for our body and how it is utilized. Are we consuming foods that promote apoptosis (death of cells - which is really a good thing!), or are we providing the fuel that cancer cells crave, and thus they go on forever and ever, dividing in rampant chaos?
I HAVE discussed this before as well. I have read so much information that I only wish I could spend my entire day blogging to share it with you.
Our hormones get out of balance when we eat inflammatory foods. As a population, especially in the U.S., we eat an extraordinary amount of inflammatory foods. A short list includes soy, dairy, gluten... I will be providing cancer promoting and cancer fighting food in the next few days.
A study in 2005 published by Michael Karin  and Florian R. Greten (Laboratory of Gene Regulation and Signal Transduction, University of California at San Diego School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology) found that one control event is most related to cancer development - and that is CHRONIC INFLAMMATION.
You can cut and paste in this link, which takes you to a google search used to find the study, and the top choice will provide a PDF with details of this study.
http://www.google.com/search?q=study+linking+inflammation+and+cancer&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe=

Chronic inflammatory diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis), and even diabetes (also an inflammatory disease) are all great risk factors for cancer.
Chronic inflammation can lead to free radical generation and rapid peroxidation, which can lead to cancer.
Come on back tomorrow where I will begin to share healthful food choices if you wish to remain cancer free. If you are already battling this disease - KNOW that you can BEAT CANCER when you give your body the proper nutrients. God's pharmacy, called nature, is MUCH, MUCH more powerful than any synthetic concoction formulated by a drug company.

To your health,
Rita S.

Cancer Prevention Tip #1

Omega 3s – a supplement that should be in everyone’s preventative toolbox! Although my focus in October will be on cancer prevention, today’s topic, Omega 3s, are found to help ward off depression, fight heart diseases, boost brain function, improve immunity and even help reduce premature births.
What is Omega 3? Read on for some tips from Dr. Russell Blaylock as well as other doctor’s newsletters…
Omega 3s are a group of polyunsaturated fats commonly found in plants, fish, algae and flaxseed.
Where can you get it? You can obtain Omega 3 from extra virgin olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil, flaxseed, chia seed, certain types of fish. The first two, the oils mentioned, are the only two that are allowed into our home for cooking and recipe use.
Why you want it? Because evidence continues to build showing that Omega 3 Fatty Acids (or N-3 fats) greatly enhance the health of the brain, as well as virtually every cell in the body.

In regards to cancer… “It has been established that Omega 3s prevent cancer and stop its spread by reducing inflammation. They also stop cancer by stimulating detoxification, building antioxidant enzymes and preventing DNA damage.
On the other hand, an overload of Omega 6 oils speed the growth and spread of cancer. Unfortunately, Omega 6 is added to much of our products found at the grocery store. It is when the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 get out of balance that problems emerge, much like out of balance hormones. You can view the topic cloud at right for more on Omega 3 and 6 oils.
Be sure to use an Omega 3 that is free of mercury and other toxins from the sea. The less expensive Omega 3s are indicative of impure Omega 3 resources. Per Blaylock, you truly get what you pay for when it comes to choosing a good supplement.
A plant based Omega three supplement will allow you to avoid that risk. In a vegan Omega 3 supplement look for one that combines a variety of Omega 3 sources that work synergestically for maximum benefit, and one in which the casing is not formulated from animal gelatin or other MSG derived sources. Also, because we obtain an overabundance of Omega 6 and 9s from may foods we eat daily - it is not necessary, or even recommended, to take a supplement containing additional 6 & 9s.
Omega 3s are not only essential for brain and heart health, our cells rely on this powerful fatty acid.

To your health,
Rita S.
